Plastic surgery is a term of wide prominence and efficient physical management. It is performed for various proficient motives. The word plastic is acquired from the Greek word ‘plastikos’ referring to form or to shape and there is no relation with the current plastics. There are many portions to a plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgery is pursued to alter the characteristics of the body when the patient is not happy with it.

Reconstructive surgery is done to rectify the defects by skin grafting. Some type of microsurgery is done which alters the faults of trauma, serious effects of surgery and disease. Plastic surgery is a distinctive type of surgery that involves the person’s looks and skill to function. There is an improvement of appearance, assurance and self image in the patients. This is done by the plastic surgeons and completed with reconstructive and cosmetic procedures.

The methods of plastic surgery have a history. One can see the tremendous improvement in the history of plastic surgery over the years. In 8 th century BC, the well known Indian surgeon ‘Susrutha’ pursued plastic surgery with the help of skin grafting for reconditioning the skin of various people. The work performed by this popular surgeon was recognized as ‘Sushruta Samhita’ and most frequently operated rhinoplasty and otoplasty.

Plastic surgery became trendy during the 18th century which has been seen in various publications like Gentleman’s Magazine. During the 1st century BC, Romans restore the injured and smashed ears of soldiers in war. In the mid of 15th century, rhinoplasty a plastic surgery of the nose was executed in the Europe. Plastic surgery for the head and face were established during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These surgeries had higher complications than the others.

Dr. John Peter Mettauer was the first well known plastic surgeon of the United States in 1827. He executed the first cleft palate operation by using a number of devices. Sir Harold Gillies is known as the father of the current plastic surgery and has introduced a variety of techniques for the latest plastic surgery.

There are different types of plastic surgeries for different parts of the body. One of them is cosmetic surgery. This type surgery is intended to build up the facial features or appearance of the person. abdominoplasty, rhinoplasty, abdominal etching, mastopexy, buttock augmentation and otoplasty are the major kinds of surgeriers performed. But many of these surgeries include various complications.

Reconstructive surgery is another technique. This is undertaken by those women who had a contracture, palate surgery for the burns, cleft lip and mastectomy. Sex reassignment surgery is also one of the types of reconstructive surgery which is undertaken by the transsexual people.
